[ȓə 'huː], 1963 als »The High Numbers« gegründete britische Rockgruppe mit Roger Daltrey (* 1944; Gesang), Pete Townshend (* 1945; Gitarre und Gesang), John Entwistle (* 1945, ✝ 2002; Bassgitarre und Gesang), Keith Moon (* 1946, ✝ 1978; Schlagzeug) und für ihn ab 1978 Kenny Jones (* 1948). Die Gruppe, der 1965 mit dem Song »My generation« der internationale Durchbruch gelang, zählte mit ihrem geradlinig harten und aggressiven Stil zu den wichtigsten Rockformationen. Spektakulär waren ihre exzentrische, mit Licht- und Rückkopplungseffekten inszenierten Bühnenshows, die regelmäßig mit der Zertrümmerung der Instrumente endeten. 1982 aufgelöst, kamen The Who 1985 (Benefizkonzert Live aid) und 1989 (USA-Tournee) nochmals zusammen. 1970 schrieb der musikalische Kopf der Gruppe Townshend die Rockoper »Tommy« (als Film 1975), 1973 das Rockoratorium »Quadrophenia« (als Film 1979) sowie 1989 das Musical »The iron man«.
